Brown Bluffs a No, Emperor Penguins Maybe?

Brown Bluffs, the Northernmost location on the Antarctic Peninsula was looking good, clear skies and an ice-free landing zone. One of our guides, Fritz was excited to point out that all those tiny spots on the hill were penguins and he thought we would have an ideal landing. Then over the PA system we hear an announcement, swells were too high for a safe landing! Oh no!

Plan B is to travel further South and visit Snow Hill Island, the site of the oldest known shack, where three Norwegian explorers spent two Winters in 1902-03, before being rescued. Its also the site of the largest Emperor colony in the Antarctic! So a bonus to our trip, fingers crossed that the ship can get close enough. Pack ice is our potential nemesis, but we will know in three hours if we can get close enough to photograph the largest of all penguins.

Our Course took us SW for several days, then North from Pettermann Island to Brown Bluffs and now down the Weddell Sea to see Emperor Penguins
