What a day! The Roald Amundsen has now sidled up to the ice field and after some investigation, the gangplank was lowered. The Expedition Crew went onto the ice and started drilling holes in it. Apparently they found it solid and thick, so off we go on an Ice Walk!
We had fifteen minutes on the ice which felt like five. It was exhilarating to walk down the gangplank and onto the sea, iced over. Apparently only a handful of expeditions have had this experience. Later in the season this is all melted, and very seldom does an expedition venture this far South in the Weddell Sea.
The ice was a foot and a half deep, making it very safe, and the team did put out markers to keep us off any parts that might be a bit soft. The expedition Crew were more than willing to take pictures and then the Adelies, three of them came to visit. To see the ship right against the ice was an interesting perspective. We are now headed up the Weddell Sea to the Falklands, what a memorable visit to Antarctica its been!
